Kate McKenzie and Meg Berman find themselves preparing for Halloween as they attempt to maintain “order” between their kids, husbands, activities of daily living, Halloween costumes and parties.
Be prepared to laugh out loud as you learn about their costume selections. Connie Shelton’s Spellbound Sweets novella is delightful. Just reading about Samantha Sweet and friends at her pastry shop will leave you drooling in anticipation of delicious treats. Join the Halloween party at a bookstore where someone dies and a rare book is now missing. This makes me crave another book in this series.
Larissa Reinhart’s novella is complete with superheroes! Add in a well scripted mystery and it is perfect for young adult readers on Halloween night. Karen Cantwell is a “new to me” author. She has written the most humorous cozy mystery of the grouping. Marmaduke Dodsworth is the most lovable British ghost and I’d love to read more of his tales! Carolyn Haines, Clacking Bones, novella is a Sarah Booth Delaney ghost story which compliments her successful series.
Morgana Best delivered a prequel to her Miss Spelled series which I’d describe as a paranormal time travel category mystery on the “scary” side of cozy mystery. This is a book you can read all in one sitting or one story at a time as each novella is a complete story. The anthology is superbly compiled, an easy read and perfect to help readers get into the Spirit of Halloween. This collection is really a must-read for lovers of cozy mystery. I think this is the first Halloween group of stories I’ve read in a while – at least all in one download – and I have to say it was fun! I have two more stories to read however I can tell you that so far? The stories are easy to read, make you think, make you laugh, and as I said before, much fun.I’d like to highlight a couple that really stood out for me. First, an Organized Mystery by Ritter Ames – Organized for Masked Motives. Ames work so this was the first story I read from the group.
Kate McKenzie and Meg Berman are at it again (no worries; these are standalone but are SO much more enjoyable for me as I know the characters). This time, it’s Halloween and they are wrangling their kids, and their husbands, with day to day life and Halloween costumes and parties. Throw in a good mystery and I’m happy! The costume related dialogue is a hoot, for the kids AND the adults so be prepared to smile.
Also, Spellbound Sweets by Connie Shelton was fun – although I think I gained weight reading about Samantha Sweet and the “crew” at her pastry shop. It is one of a few Samantha Sweet Magical Cozy Mysteries I’ve read and I’ll find previous stories to catch up. No Time to Witch, It Takes a Ghost, Frightening Features, The Vigilante Vignette, Clacking BonesI enjoyed them all.
I’ll be sure to get to the last two stories (Salad Days, Halloween Nights and Weeping Moon) tonight. Recommended cozy mystery reading for your Halloween enjoyment!
